Twelve years ago on Kenna's 10th birthday (Feb. 16, 1997) we boarded a plane in Salt Lake City. The cats, Don Gato and Addy, flew (sedated) as cargo while the rat (Creeps) was carryon. Bethany (almost two) had a tantrum and refused to allow security to check her stuffed duck.
Marah was still exhausted from her night in the ER getting stitches in her scalp from a flying wood birdhouse (cousin slumber party - blanket flipping silliness). Kenna (hugging her American Girl bday doll) was thrilled to move to the land of endless lizard hunting. The scowl on Megan's face in the picture above didn't leave for over a year (even the potholes in Logan were better than the ones on the Tucson roads).
Russell had already been living in Tucson for six months while we waited for our house to sell. Moving in the middle of the school year - I wouldn't recommend it. After the last 3-day snow/wind storm blowing over our fence, basketball hoop and ripping the antennae off the roof - besides burying the driveway in ice, I was ready to go. To this day, howling wind brings chills.
Our first "Tucson is unique" experience occurred when taking the girls to enroll them in school on Tues., Feb. 18th (Monday was President's Day). Surprise! Tucson had school on President's Day because they take Thursday and Friday off for Rodeo Days. So the girls attended one day of school that first week. Then a came a bigger surprise, our schools were on a modified year-round schedule. After their first full week of school, they had a 3-week break! My mom flew down and we girls took a road trip to Las Vegas (getting lost via the London Bridge) and then on to Aunt Lori's to play at the beach.
Tucson. we love you (now)!

That is a classic picture. Has it really been 12 years?
