Grandbaby Time

Seth (his parents too) arrived last Thursday, November 20th! The last time I saw Seth, he looked like this:

And this was the baby that greeted me with a smile at the Phoenix airport:

He talks and coos and squeals and chews on his fists and blows bubbles!!! We can't decide which is cuter, his mohawk hairdo or fat thighs...

Stone-cold Sober

BYU is rated #1 for being stone-cold sober - so what do BYU students do instead??? Marah will demonstrate... You get a gallon of milk:

Then you start drinking:
When you're sick of plain milk, add flavoring:
Continue drinking until sick... Sound fun???

Mountaineering

Kenna was the only sister excited to move to Arizona. Why? More lizards! Twelve years later, I'm not sure she'd still chase a lizard, but she certainly prefers to be out in their habitat!

One of Kenna's last adventures was exploring Utah's Canyonlands. I think she went into crevices that only lizards have seen before!

She even got to play in muddy water!

It must be a Mikesell trait - because it sure didn't come from my side of the family. Outdoors adventure for us was a KOA campground in our camper - with stove & toilet...

Marah's BYU Halloween

After telling us that she did nothing to celebrate Halloween except going to a scary movie and getting free food at Chiptole for wearing a piece of tinfoil, I found these photos on her facebook (thank you Bethany's password!)

She didn't let down her father - carved a pumpkin. (Both she and Kenna carved spiders - great minds???)The tinfoil costumes were more extensive than her explanation. I was thinking a small square...

Still compared to past years, we were lazy - except baby Seth - the chubby fox!

Ode to Scowling

My last blog may have left the impression that Megan and Bethany were my only scowlers. True, they were the only two who scowled their entire 13th year, but Kenna scowled from birth, while Marah saved her scowls for her final years of high school.Kenna could suck her thumb while scowling - a true talent! She did have something to scowl about this time - a broken leg...

Isn't that a happy Kenna ready for Christmas service... Yep, every Christmas picture that year has the same happy face!

The reasons for Kenna's scowls - a mystery. We never could discern the trigger.
This is a family favorite - Happy New Year! It is also the last picture I have of Kenna's scowl. Does she still scowl? You'd have to ask her roommates. I haven't seen one for years. (Oh, and that is non-alcholic sparkling cidar in case you're wondering...) Kenna's a happy girl now - especially if she's outside climbing mountains.

Marah is very cautious not to let her scowl be photographed - no evidence for teasing (learned from Kenna's experience). She was nice enough to take this silly picture of herself in her dorm. It doesn't quite have her fabulous "you're dead to me" look, but it's close.
This is also close, but it was really heat and boredom!
Marah is NOT a morning person so if you are the lucky one assigned or even asked by her to wake her - you may see the scowl.
This was my "Happy Mother's Day" smile... Actually, it was her favorite facial expression for much of high school. Marah's eyes change colors with her mood (and her clothing). If they are 'steely gray', BEWARE!
Why did Marah wait to scowl until sixteen? She was too soft-hearted. She cried instead. We called them "Marah meltdowns" when she was young. On her baptism day, her eyes weren't blue, green or gray - they were red. Why? Her dad was trying to take a picture of her, and she wasn't cooperating . (Hmmm, foreshadowing of things to come.) No scowls. She smiled through tears. Her "no more tears" resolution came at sixteen. Tough, scowling Marah emerged to survive those last years of high school (unless she was in trouble with her dad - that still bought tears!)
High School is over - Marah is a very HAPPY college student!

13-year-old scowlers

Washington DC this summer or Grand Canyon a decade ago. What do they have in common? A 13-year-old scowling in all the family photos. We can excuse Bethany for not smiling after the Holocaust museum. But did she find anything in DC smile worthy - nope!

Nor did Meg find anything worth smiling about on our 1998 AZ tour...

We love scowling 13-year-olds!!!!

Infamous Kenna photo

For all our avid blog followers, here is the infamous photo removed from the wall each time her friends came over.

When we saw this bear at Muir Woods, we had to have a photo. Not quite as cute - she wouldn't pull the face!

Wilson Soundwaves

What does Bethany look forward to most - besides checking facebook after school or IRHS football games sitting behind the snack bar talking to her friends? Sleeping in on Saturday mornings!!!
Not last weekend! She had to be across town and ready to sing by 8 am.
It was worth it - they earned superior ratings in every category!
In case you don't recognize her - she still has black hair. The temporary dye from Halloween isn't proving to be very temporary. I still struggle to recognize her in a crowd - especially from behind.

Still Jealous

Am I the only one with a younger sibling that shined at everything they did? Not only did she get the blonde hair and non-freckling skin, but also a photographic memory, great coordination, good fashion sense, outgoing personality - you get the idea. She was the cheerleader/dancer. I was the shy, book nerd...

I thought had matured beyond childhood jealousy until this week. Guess who took this picture?
Yes, my little sister spent a week in Maryland. Not only did see the beautiful autumn leaves, she got to see Seth smile and laugh before I did. I turned into a green-eyed jealous grandma!!!
She did sent some very cute pictures so I could see what I was missing!

The non-BYU daughters

It's been three years since Megan's bridal shower.
Now she has this cute one who makes getting a shower quite impossible!
My Bethany baby is an eighth grader, but she can still blow bubbles,
and pull the cutest faces!

Oldest and youngest, ten years apart, but both love to read, write stories and scowled in ALL 13-year-old vacation photos (the middle two didn't).

Adventures of the BYU daughters

The first weeks of fall semester found the sisters together more than not,but as the semester progressed, Marah stayed home practicing her 2am jumping skills.

while Kenna went on a field trip to crawl through mud, water and very tight
openings in the Canyonland narrows.

Marah wrapped up to watch her 'brothers' flag football game,While Kenna found herself hiking Timp in an unexpected snowstorm.
Marah enjoyed Chipotle with her roomies,
while Kenna tended to dine out with the 'boys'.
What do their parents think? As long as they're happy, healthy, grades are good, and most importantly, they follow Cougar football faithfully, and call their father with frequent score updates,We are most fortunate parents!
